Planning

There are many things to consider when planning for your training tower. Key decisions must be made before you can finalize your specifications. Available land and condition of the soil, money and structure quality are all variables in your training tower project. A good plan will help you avoid costly delays and approve the best specifications for your organization.

Early planning
Topics that should be discussed during early planning stages are land, money and structure type. Many departments and organizations have a proposed site in mind that has already been acquired or donated for a training building. The location of your training building is critical. You must consider things like neighborhood growth, environmental issues, adequate space and soil condition. One small detail like an endangered species or rock formations could be costly enough to stop a project.

Budget
Making decisions about what kind of training building you want can quickly determine the budget you will need to start your project. WHP can work with you in determining budgetary dollar figures to keep you from requesting more funding before the project is complete.

Needs assessment
Your department or organization heads must agree on key elements of your project to move forward. Questions that should be discussed include:

  • What do we expect this project to do for us?
  • Will special props be required?
  • What kinds of fires will be allowed on site?
  • Will we train year round?
  • What will we burn and how much will it cost?
